Of course, southern Africa is home to various wild animals and those, too, can be spotted near the falls. From the helicopter, we saw elephants. While taking a cruise along the Zambezi, several hippo were seen, as was a small crocodile sunning itself on the shore.
And on the footpath, we were greeted at one point by a baboon running toward us, as well as several smaller primates lucky enough to call this natural wonder home.
The spray from Victoria Falls rises like a huge puff of smoke. From the one-of-a-kind migration of Sandhill Cranes to rare bird sightings along with the swamp habitats of Indiana Dunes National Park, the experiences won't disappoint. Discover the spectacular world of natural caves in Southern Indiana.
All are entirely natural and feature distinct formations and history. You can pick up a passport at any cave. It is often at this location that objects, animals, and unfortunately sometimes people, are deposited along the edge of the water after they have been unlucky enough to have been swept over the falls.
The river continues zigzagging through a total of six gorges, which range from to feet m deep, before settling into a steep, walled chasm known as the Batoka Gorge which is filled with wild rapids. After traveling miles k the river finally empties into Lake Kariba. In ancient past, each of these gorges has been the location of an earlier version of Victoria Falls which has moved further upstream as the river has eroded away the sandstone.
In the rainy season from November to early April, the falls are by volume of water the largest in the world only rivaled by Iguazu Falls in South America. Victoria Falls Bridge crosses the Second Gorge. The character of Victoria Falls is greatly influenced by the time of year. During the rainy season, only two islands appear at the top of the falls. These are Livingston Island the location where the explorer first glimpsed the cataract , and Boaruka Island, near the western bank.
As the flow of the river drops during the dry season many more temporary islands appear. The change in the amount of water is so dramatic that while Victoria has had the highest recorded peak flow, it is the third behind Niagara Falls and Iguazu Falls in average yearly flow.
Archeological sites around the Falls indicate that this area has been occupied by humans since the Middle Stone Age 50, years ago. To the people that lived in the area, the Matabele, the Batswana and the Makololo, the falls became a familiar sight, but for most of its history was little known outside of the region. Even after Livingstone's visit, European visitors were infrequent due to the remote location. Then in the Victoria Falls Bridge opened as part of an ambitious effort to build a railway from Cape Town to Cairo.
Cecil Rhodes, the English-born South African businessman behind the project, directed engineers to "build the bridge across the Zambezi where the trains, as they pass, will catch the spray of the Falls". The bridge, a beautiful steel arch, crosses feet m above the second gorge. About the same time the railway started operation, Victoria Falls Hotel opened.
Finally visitors could use the train to travel to the site and stay in the relative comfort of the hotel. Together, these two national parks protect the world's largest waterfall.
The falls reach a height of feet m and stretch across 5, feet 1, m creating the largest single sheet of falling water. Victoria Falls National Park is even smaller than its neighboring Mosi-oa-Tunya covering an area of only 9 square miles The Zambezi River is the source of the falls which also serves as part of the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Victoria Falls is actually comprised of five individual falls, of which, four of them are located on the Zimbabwe side of the border. The fifth Eastern Cataract is located on the Zambia side of the border. Elephant, buffalo, white rhino, eland, hippo, and varying antelope can be experienced with short game drives in the park.
Animals are not the reason to visit, but they do add to the overall nature experience. There is also a massive balboa tree that measures 52 feet 16 m in diameter and Victoria Falls is the highlight of the national park.
It is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Iguazu Falls located on the border of Argentina and Brazil is the largest waterfall complex, but Victoria Falls is the largest single sheet waterfall.
