The America I know is decent and generous. Sure, we have real anxieties — about paying the bills, protecting our kids, caring for a sick parent. We get frustrated with political gridlock, worry about racial divisions; are shocked and saddened by the madness of Orlando or Nice. There are pockets of America that never recovered from factory closures; men who took pride in hard work and providing for their families who now feel forgotten; parents who wonder whether their kids will have the same opportunities we had.
All that is real. I see people working hard and starting businesses; people teaching kids and serving our country. I see engineers inventing stuff, and doctors coming up with new cures. I see a younger generation full of energy and new ideas, not constrained by what is, ready to seize what ought to be. Most of all, I see Americans of every party, every background, every faith who believe that we are stronger together — black, white, Latino, Asian, Native American; young and old; gay, straight, men, women, folks with disabilities, all pledging allegiance, under the same proud flag, to this big, bold country that we love.
Now, eight years ago, Hillary and I were rivals for the Democratic nomination. We battled for a year and a half. Every time I thought I might have that race won, Hillary just came back stronger.
But after it was all over, I asked Hillary to join my team. She was a little surprised, but ultimately said yes — because she knew that what was at stake was bigger than either of us. And for four years, I had a front-row seat to her intelligence, her judgment, and her discipline.
You know, nothing truly prepares you for the demands of the Oval Office. Even in the middle of crisis, she listens to people, and keeps her cool, and treats everybody with respect. And no matter how daunting the odds; no matter how much people try to knock her down, she never, ever quits.
And, by the way, in case you were wondering about her judgment, look at her choice of running mate. Tim Kaine is as good a man, as humble and committed a public servant, as anyone I know. Just like my dear friend and brother Joe Biden has made me a better President.
Not really a facts guy, either. Your voice? If so, you should vote for him. If you want someone with a lifelong track record of fighting for higher wages, better benefits, a fairer tax code, a bigger voice for workers, and stronger regulations on Wall Street, then you should vote for Hillary Clinton. Show me how to love deeper than the surface, my friend And you can show me what it means to have purpose And I'll tell you again. Don't you lose hope the sky's not falling Please just listen 'cause I'll be calling Stay with me just one more moment I know you're in pain just please don't show it.
It's too late I'm afraid I have to leave One more moment please. Promise me, promise me that you'll I fell down, down, down Into this dark and lonely hole There was no one there to care about me anymore And I needed a way to climb and grab a hold of the edge You were sitting there holding a rope.
And we'll go up, up, up But I'll fly a little higher Go up in the clouds because the view is a little nicer Up here my dear It won't be long now, it won't be long now. When we get back on land Well I'll never get my chance Be ready to live and it'll be ripped right out of my hands And maybe someday we'll take a little ride Go up, up, up and everything will be just fine.
And we'll go up, up, up But I'll fly a little higher Go up in the clouds because the view is a little nicer Up here my dear. If only I had a little bit more time If only I had a little bit more time with you. We could go up, up, up And take that little ride We'll sit there holding hands And everything would be just right.
And maybe someday I'll see you again We'll float up in the clouds and we'll never see the end. We'll go up, up, up But I'll fly a little higher Go up in the clouds because the view is a little nicer Up here my dear It won't be long now, it won't be long now. By that time, Zach was too sick to go, and I was really feeling his absence. It felt like a not-so-fun sneak preview of how life was going to be without him.
